The Corica Loach (Nemacheilus corica) is a small, slender fish from the hill streams and river systems of the Indian subcontinent, with confirmed records from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Its patterning is the most immediately recognizable thing about it: rows of variably sized dark spots run along the dorsal surface from head to tail, with a second row tracking along each flank following the lateral line, and both rows converge in a solid dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin. The extended pectoral fins and complete lateral line are also worth noting for identification purposes. Taxonomically, the fish has been bounced between Nemacheilus and Schistura in the hobby, and its genus-level placement is still considered unresolved. In the wild it occupies clear, fast-moving hill streams with sandy substrates, though it has also been found in large rivers carrying heavy monsoon flow over mixed substrate. It is not particularly aggressive for a loach, but it does better when kept in the company of its own kind, with plenty of cover to reduce territorial friction. Good tankmates include open-water swimmers like danios and rasboras, as well as other rheophilic bottom-dwellers. Breeding has not been documented in the aquarium. Its modest size, manageable temperament, and forgiving water parameter range make it a reasonable choice for a beginner willing to set up a species-appropriate community.
