The fairy cichlid (Neolamprologus brichardi) is one of those fish that earns its popularity honestly. Native to the rocky shorelines of northern Lake Tanganyika, it forms enormous shoals in the wild, sometimes numbering in the thousands, and brings that same remarkable social structure into the aquarium. Pairs bond strongly and spawn in rocky caves, but what really sets this species apart is its cooperative breeding behavior. Older offspring from previous spawns actively help guard younger siblings, meaning a well-established group can cycle through several overlapping generations in a surprisingly harmonious way. That said, the word "peaceful" doesn't really apply here. Pairs become seriously territorial around spawning sites and will not hesitate to harass tankmates, so community setups require careful thought. Your best options for tankmates are smaller Tanganyikan species that occupy different parts of the water column, such as open-water Cyprichromis, and you'll want plenty of rockwork with broken sightlines if you try mixing them with other cave-dwellers. For those new to Rift Lake cichlids, this is actually a forgiving starting point. It breeds readily, eats without fuss, and rewards patient observation with genuinely interesting family dynamics. One important note: several closely related species exist within the brichardi complex, and they hybridize freely, so avoid housing them together.
