One of the most socially sophisticated cichlids in the hobby, Neolamprologus pulcher comes from the sediment-rich shallows of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. What makes this fish genuinely fascinating is its cooperative breeding system. In the wild, breeding pairs are often assisted by younger 'helper' fish that participate in territory defense and brood care. Even in aquarium settings, the pair bond is tight and the parents are dedicated, depositing somewhere between 20 and 60 eggs tucked into rocky crevices and defending the surrounding territory with real conviction. They are small fish, but they carry themselves with the confidence of something much larger, and tankmates that crowd their space will hear about it. Because of that territorial drive, tank selection and aquascape matter more than usual here. Plenty of rocky structure with caves and crevices gives them the natural framework they need to settle in and behave naturally. This is not a fish for a community tank full of gentle mid-water species. Kept with appropriate Tanganyikan companions or in a species setup, though, they reward the intermediate keeper with years of genuinely interesting behavior and long-term pair bonds that are rare to observe this clearly in freshwater fish.
