The Fourspine Cichlid (Neolamprologus tetracanthus) is a solidly built predator from Lake Tanganyika, where it ranges widely across the lake's sandy shallows and transitional zones. It sits at a decent size for a lamprologine, and its proportions give it a somewhat imposing presence compared to the smaller shell-dwelling relatives it shares the lake with. What makes this fish genuinely interesting is its feeding strategy: rather than crushing mollusk shells the way some cichlids do, it generates enough suction to pull the animal cleanly out of its shell. A neat piece of biomechanical problem-solving. In the wild it also takes insect larvae and small fish, so in the aquarium a meaty, varied diet keeps it in good condition. Behaviorally, expect the territorial attitude typical of Tanganyikan cichlids. This is not a community fish in the usual sense, and tankmates need to be chosen thoughtfully. A sand substrate is worth providing both for its comfort and to encourage natural foraging behavior. With reasonable experience keeping Rift Lake species, most hobbyists will find this fish manageable, though its size and temperament mean it needs a roomy setup and compatible company to really settle in.
