The Bengal mud eel (Ophisternon bengalense) is a serpentine freshwater fish that will immediately make visitors to your tank do a double-take. Elongated and smooth-bodied, it looks far more like a snake than a conventional fish, with no visible pectoral or pelvic fins to break the illusion. In the wild it ranges broadly across South and Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka through Indonesia and the Philippines all the way to New Guinea and northern Australia, where it occupies the murkiest, most vegetation-choked corners of the aquatic world. Rice paddies, canal margins, swamps, and brackish estuaries near river mouths. It is a facultative air-breather, meaning it can gulp atmospheric oxygen when water conditions are poor, which speaks to how oxygen-depleted its natural haunts often are. In the wild, males construct and defend burrows, and the species spends much of its time buried in soft sediment rather than out in open water. Aquarium keepers should expect the same behavior. A deep, soft substrate and plenty of hiding options are essential. This is not a community fish; it is a dedicated predator and escape artist that requires a tightly covered, species-appropriate setup. An intermediate-level keeper with a large, well-planned tank will get the most out of this genuinely unusual fish.
