The Gold-specs Jawfish (Opistognathus randalli) is a small but feisty reef-associated species native to Indonesia, eastern Borneo, and the Philippines, where it inhabits sandy rubble zones near coral reefs at depths ranging from around 5 to 30 meters. Like other jawfish, it spends most of its time hovering just above a self-constructed burrow, darting back inside at the first sign of trouble. What sets the males of this species apart is their remarkably aggressive territorial streak. Males will engage in dramatic jaw-locking standoffs with rivals, apparently wrestling to defend their burrows or even claim a neighbor's. This means keeping multiple males together is asking for trouble unless you have a seriously spacious setup with plenty of territory to go around. For a single specimen or a compatible pair, though, this fish rewards patient observation with plenty of personality. The sandy substrate is non-negotiable. It needs enough depth to dig properly, and a lid is essential since jawfish are notorious jumpers. Intermediate-level keepers who can meet its burrowing and housing needs will find this a genuinely engaging fish with more character than its modest size might suggest.
