The Barna Baril (Opsarius barna) is a sleek, active cyprinid from the clear, gravel-bottomed hill streams and larger rivers of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, with populations also recorded from the Mekong basin. It's a visually distinctive fish, marked by 9 to 11 dark blue vertical bars along the body, and can reach a respectable size for a barb-type fish. Despite being rated as beginner-friendly in terms of basic water care, this species is not a good fit for a typical community setup. It's an extremely fast, assertive swimmer and a vigorous feeder that can easily overwhelm calmer or smaller fish. Anything small enough to fit in its mouth is genuinely at risk. The ideal tankmates are robust, similarly-sized, open-water cyprinids like Dawkinsia, Devario, or larger Rasbora species, along with bottom-dwellers such as Botia, Garra, or Schistura. Many characins and loricariid catfish can also work well. This species is social but forms a pecking order rather than a tight school, so keeping five or more individuals is important. Smaller groups tend to result in one or two fish being persistently harassed. Breeding in captivity is largely undocumented, though cool water changes appear to encourage spawning activity. It turns up in the trade occasionally under names like striped hill trout or banded hill trout.
