Geophagus sp. 'orange head' is one of the more recognizable members of its genus, thanks to the warm orange to reddish pigmentation that sweeps across the head of adults. Most intensely in dominant males. Two variants exist, both originating from the Tapajós drainage in Brazil despite some historical mislabeling in the trade. The Arapiuns form shows orange extending down onto the gill cover and sports an additional orange stripe along the dorsal surface toward the tail, while the so-called 'Araguaia' form is generally less colorful, with orange mostly concentrated above the eyes. Body patterning includes a dark lateral spot, and juveniles show vertical bars that become more complex with age. This is a gregarious species that does best in groups of five or more, where a natural hierarchy develops. Groups kept below this number tend to become either anxious or unbalanced in aggression. Despite a reputation that can accompany the word 'cichlid', this species is largely peaceful toward fish it cannot swallow whole, making it workable in a roomy community of similarly sized, compatible tankmates. Breeding behavior is genuinely engaging. Pairs are larvophilous, biparental mouthbrooders that clean a flat surface before spawning, with the female initially carrying the eggs and both parents often sharing fry care as the young develop. Quality can vary in commercially bred stock, so sourcing from reputable keepers pays off.
