Mountainous star coral (Orbicella annularis) is one of the most ecologically significant corals in the Caribbean, forming the massive, boulder-like structures that serve as the literal foundation of many reef systems. Colonies grow in lobed to columnar shapes over long timescales, creating the kind of imposing, dome-shaped heads that define classic Caribbean reef scenery. Up close, the surface is covered in small, flattened corallites roughly 2 to 3mm across, arranged in a tidy, almost geometric pattern with conspicuous ridges between them. Coloration is typically earthy. Browns and yellows that read as understated in a reef tank but have a natural, authentic look that many coral enthusiasts appreciate. In the wild this species thrives across a broad range of reef habitats, which speaks to its adaptability. In captivity it falls into intermediate territory. Not a beginner coral, but not especially demanding either. It appreciates moderate light and moderate water movement, conditions found on most mid-level reef setups. Growth in the aquarium is slow, as you'd expect from a massive coral, so patience is part of the deal. For hobbyists interested in keeping a genuinely iconic piece of Caribbean reef ecology, this is a rewarding long-term project.
