Bumpy star coral (Orbicella franksi) is one of those solid, dependable large-polyp stony corals that forms the structural backbone of many Caribbean reef systems. Colonies grow in massive, plate-like, or encrusting forms, and the surface has a characteristically uneven, bumpy texture that gives the species its common name. The individual corallites are conical and noticeably irregular in both shape and size, ranging a few millimeters across, which contributes to that rough, organic look across the colony face. Coloration tends toward earthy tones, browns, greys, and occasional yellowish-greens, so it won't be the loudest thing in your tank, but there's a natural, understated appeal to it that works well in a mixed reef display. In the wild this coral is a genuine reef builder, contributing significantly to carbonate structure over time. In captivity it appreciates moderate light and moderate flow, and its intermediate care rating reflects that it needs stable water quality and a reasonably well-established system to thrive. It's not the right pick for someone just starting out with stony corals, but for a hobbyist with a settled reef tank who wants something with real ecological character and a solid, sculptural presence, it's a rewarding species to work with.
