The blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) is a robust cichlid native to a wide stretch of northeast Africa and the Middle East, including the Jordan Valley, the lower Nile, the Chad Basin, and the Senegal River system. It has since been introduced to warm-water ponds and reservoirs across parts of the world, partly because of its value as a food fish and partly because of its remarkable adaptability. In the wild it occupies everything from open water to rocky shallows and vegetated margins, and it handles a surprisingly broad range of conditions, including mildly brackish water, with ease. That resilience carries over well into the aquarium, making it a workable choice for keepers who are new to larger cichlids. Blue tilapia are generally docile and active, spending much of their time moving through the water column rather than lurking. They school, though individuals can show territorial tendencies at times. Diet in the wild shifts with age: juveniles take copepods, small crustaceans, and invertebrate matter, while adults graze heavily on phytoplankton. In the aquarium they accept a wide range of foods readily. They are maternal mouthbrooders and can reach sexual maturity in just five to six months, so breeding is very achievable if you have a compatible pair.
