Dwarf medaka (Oryzias minutillus) is one of the smallest members of the ricefish family, barely reaching three-quarters of an inch at full size. It comes from clear-water swamps, rice paddies, and slow-moving lowland habitats across a broad sweep of Southeast Asia, from Thailand and the Malay Peninsula through Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and into southern China. In the aquarium it's a genuinely peaceful fish, but its tiny size means it can be easily overwhelmed or outcompeted in a typical community setup. Better tankmates include other diminutive species from the region, small Boraras or Trigonostigma, nano danios, and dwarf anabantoids like Parosphromenus or chocolate gouramis, along with Caridina or Neocaridina shrimp. A group of eight or more brings out more confident, natural behavior. Breeding is one of the real highlights of keeping this species. Males deepen in color during morning spawning activity and briefly hold small territories while courting females. The female carries the fertilized egg cluster attached to her body for a while before depositing eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Adults generally leave the eggs alone but will eat free-swimming fry, so dense planting or a separate rearing container is worth having on hand. This is a beginner-accessible species as long as the nano scale of everything, tank, food, tankmates, is kept in mind.
