Found only in the Xingu River basin of Brazil, this obscure South American characin, Ossubtus xinguense, occupies a narrow natural range that makes it a genuinely uncommon find in the hobby. In the wild it grazes on aquatic plants and filamentous algae, and that herbivorous tendency carries over into the aquarium. Keepers should be cautious about pairing it with prized live plants. That said, it adapts readily to prepared foods including flakes and frozen offerings, which is part of what makes it a manageable choice even for less experienced fishkeepers. The social dynamics are where things get interesting. Females can be notably aggressive toward one another, so keeping multiple females together tends to cause friction. Males, on the other hand, are often found trailing females, sometimes several at a time. One thing worth flagging for anyone running a planted shrimp tank: this fish will treat larger shrimp as a meal rather than a tankmate. Despite these quirks, its straightforward feeding requirements and tolerance for a fairly standard water setup make it more approachable than many Xingu-endemic species, which are often demanding due to the river's highly oxygenated, fast-moving conditions.
