Found in the blackwater rivers of the Atabapo basin in the Orinoco system, Uaru fernandezyepezi is a close relative of the more familiar uaru cichlid and shares that genus's distinctive deep, laterally compressed body shape. It's a genuinely uncommon fish. Populations in the wild are naturally sparse, and it has never been particularly valued as a food source by local fishers, which gives you some sense of how rarely it turns up at all. In the aquarium hobby it remains something of a rarity, so finding specimens can take patience and some networking with specialist cichlid keepers. Like others in the genus, it comes from soft, warm, highly acidic blackwater environments, and replicating those conditions, very low pH, minimal hardness, and elevated temperatures, is important for long-term success. This is not a fish for a community setup with hard-water species; it does best alongside other South American cichlids adapted to similar water chemistry. Given its intermediate care rating and specific water requirements, it suits keepers who have some experience with soft-water cichlids and are ready to invest in a dedicated setup. A long-lived fish in good conditions, it can reward that investment for a decade or more.
