Kuhli Loach

A small, secretive loach from the blackwater habitats of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and West Java, Pangio cuneovirgata belongs to a genus that hobbyists typically know as kuhli or coolie loaches. This particular species is rarely encountered in the trade, turning up most often as an accidental inclusion in shipments of similar-looking relatives. So if you spot one, take a closer look. Identification clues include dark saddle markings confined to the upper half of the body, a yellowish background on that upper surface, a squared-off tail fin, a dark blotch at the tail base, and notably long nasal barbels. In the wild it inhabits dense leaf litter in peat swamps and vegetated stream edges with moderate current, sharing habitat with P. kuhlii across much of its range. Despite the aggressive and territorial tags on the data sheet, the genus as a whole is consistently reported as peaceful toward appropriately sized companions, though individuals may snack on eggs or fry. Like other Pangio, these loaches like company. A group of five or six is a sensible starting point, as they will pile into a shared hiding spot together. Small, soft-water fish such as Boraras or Trichopsis make good neighbors. Like all cobitids, they carry sharp sub-ocular spines that can snag in nets, so use a container to move them.
