Found in forest streams of Malaysia and Indonesia, Pangio malayana is a slender, eel-shaped cobitid loach that most hobbyists encounter without realizing it. This species frequently arrives undetected among shipments of similar-looking relatives. It belongs to the kuhlii-oblonga species group and can be told apart from close lookalikes by its long nasal barbels, a series of 10 to 16 dark saddles running along the upper body, a black bar at the caudal-fin base with the rest of that fin clear, three dark bars on the head, and a notched rather than straight-edged tail. Despite the aggressive and territorial tags that sometimes follow it in data sheets, hobbyist experience with Pangio species broadly points toward peaceful behavior with tankmates, though any small fry or eggs may be at risk. Like others in the genus, this species is a social animal that naturally congregates in groups and will pile together in a shared hideout when resting. Keeping at least five or six together is strongly recommended. Small, gentle species from similar Southeast Asian habitats make the best companions. The genus also possesses sharp sub-ocular spines that can snag nets, so a soft mesh or container is worth using when moving fish. Breeding in captivity has not been documented.
