The Borneo Loach (Pangio shelfordii) is a slender, eel-shaped cobitid from the soft, acidic blackwater streams and forest waterways of Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula. In the wild it inhabits shaded, slow-moving water over muddy substrate, often buried among accumulations of leaf litter. Its patterning is genuinely variable. Populations from different river systems show everything from bold midlateral blotches and dorsal saddles to near-continuous dark lateral stripes and detailed dorsal mottling, which means two specimens from different origins can look quite different. A dark bar at the caudal-fin base and mottled tail fin are the most consistent identification markers across the species. Despite being listed as territorial, it behaves much like other Pangio species in practice. Generally peaceable with small, similarly-natured fish, though it may take eggs or fry given the opportunity. It does best in groups of five or more, and kept that way it will pile into a shared hiding spot with apparent enthusiasm. Sub-ocular spines common to all cobitids mean care with nets is worthwhile. These can snag easily. It turns up in the hobby occasionally, often as bycatch in shipments of related loaches, and its beginner-friendly care level makes it a reasonable choice for anyone running a soft-water Southeast Asian setup.
