The Silver Barbel (Pareutropius longifilis) is a small, active catfish from the river systems of Tanzania, Mozambique, and Malawi, where it spends its time in flowing water picking off aquatic and terrestrial insects. Despite the common name suggesting otherwise, this is not a true barbel but a schilbeid catfish, and once you see a group of them darting around a well-oxygenated aquarium, the mix-up is forgivable. They have a slender, silvery profile that suits their role as fast-moving open-water swimmers. Personality-wise, these fish lean toward the nervous side when kept in small numbers. Individuals will often hang back, hide, or pace anxiously. Put them in a proper school of six or more, though, and the difference is remarkable: they gain confidence, become much more visible, and spend their days actively moving through the water column. That social dependency is probably the most important thing to understand about keeping them well. Their omnivorous diet makes feeding straightforward, and they accept most standard aquarium foods readily. Tankmates should be peaceful and of similar size, since very small companions might cause stress or competition. This is a good intermediate-level species for someone ready to move beyond beginner community setups but not yet tackling more demanding fish.
