The dash-dot goatfish (Parupeneus barberinus) is one of the more recognizable members of its family, wearing a clean white-to-cream body divided by a bold black lateral stripe that runs from the snout back through the eye, often punctuated by a dark spot near the tail. Hence the common name. Fish from some parts of Micronesia add a yellow band above that dark stripe, making regional variation part of the fun for those who pay attention. This species ranges across a huge swath of the Indo-Pacific, from the East African coast all the way out to the Marquesas and Tuamotu Archipelago, where adults patrol sandy flats, rubble zones, and the sandy margins of lagoon and seaward reefs, sometimes solo and sometimes in loose groups. Those paired chin barbels are their main tool, constantly probing substrate for crabs, polychaete worms, small molluscs, shrimps, and whatever else happens to be buried. In an aquarium, that same foraging drive means they need generous open sand areas to stay active and mentally engaged. They grow substantial and need a roomy system to thrive. Anything small enough to fit in their mouth is fair game, so choose tankmates accordingly. A rewarding fish for intermediate keepers with the space to do it right.
