Maldive coral (Pavona maldivensis) is one of those species that keeps you guessing. A single colony can look completely different depending on where it settled. In exposed, high-energy reef zones it builds dense columnar structures, while in calmer, shaded spots it spreads out into thin horizontal or encrusting plates. Many colonies are a mix of both at once. The individual corallites are circular and plocoid, often irregularly sized, with those near plate edges sometimes lining up in neat parallel rows. Coloration ranges from pale grey-brown to dark green, and occasionally you'll find colonies in a warm orange tone. In the wild it occupies a wide range of Indo-Pacific reef environments, from shallow wave-battered slopes to vertical rock faces and the dim interiors of caverns, anywhere from the surface down to around 40 meters. That ecological flexibility translates well to the aquarium. It tolerates lower light and gentle flow better than many other Pavona species, which makes it an accessible entry point for hobbyists moving into keeping SPS-type stony corals. It won't push your system to its limits, but it rewards stable water conditions and patience with steady, interesting growth that can take on different forms as it explores its space.
