About

The pearl cichlid (Geophagus brasiliensis) is one of the more visually variable cichlids you'll encounter in the hobby, with wild fish showing dramatically different coloration depending on where they come from. Base tones can lean blue, green, or yellow, all overlaid with the iridescent, pearlescent scaling that gives this species its common name. Body shape also varies with habitat: fish from fast-moving rivers tend toward a leaner, more elongated profile, while those from slower waters carry a stockier build. Native to coastal river systems along eastern and southern Brazil into Uruguay, this is a tough, adaptable species with a wide tolerance for water conditions, which makes it manageable for intermediate keepers. That said, its temperament demands respect. Males turn seriously territorial during spawning, and anything small enough to fit in their mouth is at risk. Like most eartheaters it will sift through substrate regularly, so a soft sandy bottom is a practical consideration. The species is a biparental substrate spawner, meaning both parents share duties guarding eggs and fry. A rewarding behavior to observe if you can set up the tank accordingly. Worth noting: fish sold in Europe as Gymnogeophagus australis are frequently this species instead, so confirm your source if species accuracy matters to you.
