Dwarf Pleco
Peckoltia brevis
A feisty dwarf pleco from Brazil's Purus River with surprisingly bold attitude.

About
A compact armored catfish from the Purus River basin of Brazil, Peckoltia brevis sits at the smaller end of the pleco world but carries a temperament that punches well above its weight. Males in particular can be quarrelsome with their own kind and with similarly shaped bottom-dwellers, so tank placement and territory management matter more than you might expect from a fish this size. Like others in its genus, it has the capacity for facultative air-breathing, meaning it can gulp atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen in the water drops low. A useful adaptation in the slow, sometimes oxygen-depleted waters it calls home in the wild. In the aquarium it behaves as a true omnivore, so a varied diet that includes both meaty foods and vegetable matter will keep it in good condition. Its tolerance for a fairly wide range of water chemistry makes it less fussy than many South American species on that front, but the territorial aggression means it's not ideally suited to a crowded community of bottom-dwellers. This is a species that rewards keepers who plan their stocking carefully and provide plenty of broken sightlines with driftwood and caves.
