Fantail Filefish

The fantail filefish (Pervagor spilosoma) is a reef-associated species found almost exclusively around the Hawaiian Islands, including the Leeward Chain, with only occasional sightings near Johnston Island. Its common name tells you exactly what to look at first. That bright orange tail standing out against a body covered in dark spots, making it one of the more recognizable filefish in the Pacific. In the wild it moves over mixed habitats of rock, rubble, and sand around coral reefs, picking at algae, small invertebrates, and the occasional coral polyp. Juveniles tend to spend time both near the bottom and higher in the water column, while adults settle into a more bottom-oriented lifestyle. In the aquarium, this species is generally considered manageable even for newer saltwater keepers, which is a pleasant surprise given how intimidating some filefish can seem. Because it will nibble corals and small invertebrates, it belongs in a fish-only or FOWLR setup rather than a reef tank. That's really the biggest compatibility consideration to keep in mind. Give it plenty of rockwork to explore and a varied meaty diet, and the fantail filefish tends to settle in well and show off that distinctive coloration consistently.
