Pike Cichlid (Crenicichla albopunctata) is one of the smaller members of the pike cichlid group, and its manageable adult size makes it a more accessible entry point into a genus that can otherwise demand enormous tanks. Native to a relatively narrow stretch of South American lowland drainages, from French Guiana's Approuague River west to the Demerara River in Guyana, this species naturally inhabits shaded forest creeks above the first rapids, where the current is gentle and the bottom runs to sand and silt. Think dappled light filtering through canopy, slow water, and plenty of cover. In the aquarium, that background is worth keeping in mind when setting up a tank. Despite its modest proportions, this is still unmistakably a pike cichlid in terms of personality. Elongated body, large mouth, and a clear predatory disposition toward smaller tankmates. It is best housed with other large cichlids capable of holding their own, or kept in a species-only setup. Breeding has been reported only rarely in captivity, so don't expect much documentation to guide you there. For hobbyists curious about pike cichlids but not ready to commit to a larger, more demanding species, this one offers a reasonable starting point without sacrificing any of the character.
