Bloch's catfish (Pimelodus blochii) is a mid-to-large South American catfish found across some impressive river systems, including the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo basins, where it typically inhabits the lower stretches of big, flowing rivers. In the wild it leads a surprisingly varied life, consuming fruits, small fish, insects, and organic debris. And in doing so plays an genuine ecological role by dispersing plant seeds through its gut. That dietary flexibility carries over well into captivity, where it will accept a wide range of foods without much fuss. Four dark longitudinal stripes run along its silvery body, making identification straightforward and giving it a clean, bold look that stands out in a large community. It's gregarious by nature and does better with company than alone, so keeping a small group is worth considering if your tank size allows. Activity can occur both day and night, though like most pimelodids it appreciates having some driftwood or other shelter to retreat to. With adults reaching well over eight inches and capable of hitting nearly fourteen, this fish needs real estate and tankmates that won't end up as a snack. It's a solid choice for the intermediate keeper who already has experience managing larger catfish and the filtration demands that come with them.
