The silver croaker (Plagioscion squamosissimus) is one of those fish that genuinely surprises people. A large, silvery predator from South America that somehow carries a beginner-friendly care rating despite growing well beyond a foot and a half. In the wild it ranges across some of the continent's most significant river systems, including the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná, Paraguay, and São Francisco basins, as well as the rivers of the Guianas. What makes it ecologically interesting is its flexibility: this species moves comfortably between freshwater and brackish conditions throughout its life cycle, which speaks to a robust constitution that translates well to captivity. Juveniles start out picking off crustacean larvae, aquatic insects, and copepods, but adults shift to a fully piscivorous diet, so any tankmates small enough to swallow are going to disappear. The body is elongated and laterally compressed with a silvery sheen and a somewhat perch-like profile. Not a flashy fish, but a purposeful-looking one. Because of its eventual size, a serious commitment to tank volume is non-negotiable, and it should be housed only with fish large enough to avoid becoming a meal. Given appropriate space and a steady supply of meaty food, it proves a durable, long-lived resident.
