Cauliflower Coral (Pocillopora woodjonesi) is one of those corals that tells you exactly where it came from just by looking at it. In the wild it occupies the upper reaches of reef slopes where wave energy is relentless, and its growth form reflects that life. Colonies spread outward in flattened, sprawling branches that hug and drape across the substrate rather than reaching upward like many of its pocilloporid cousins. The surface of those branches has a fine granular texture across the coenosteum, giving it a subtly rough appearance up close. Coloration runs from soft pink to brown depending on zooxanthellae density and light conditions. Its range spans a wide tropical band across the Indo-Pacific, from the surface down to around 40 meters, though it is most at home in shallow, high-energy zones. In the aquarium, replicating that high-flow, high-light environment is non-negotiable. This is not a coral that tolerates sluggish water movement or dim corners of the tank. It is generally considered reef safe and compatible with typical mixed reef setups, though its intermediate care rating means it rewards keepers who already have a handle on stable water chemistry and consistent flow management. A good next step for someone moving beyond beginner corals.
