Cauliflower coral (Pocillopora zelli) is a solid, well-structured species found across shallow reef environments and rocky shorelines from Indonesia out to Micronesia. In the wild it grows in waters ranging from the surface down to around 40 meters, thriving in the kind of bright, wave-washed conditions that keep coral tissue healthy and coloration vivid. Colonies take on either compact hemispherical mounds or a more open branching form, with tall, nearly cylindrical branches that gradually flatten toward their tips. The small bumps along the branches, called verrucae, are neatly arranged and evenly sized, giving the coral a tidy, textured appearance. Outer branches on mature colonies sometimes fuse together, adding to the sense of density and structure. Coloration runs toward brown, with white tips on the branch ends that give the colony a two-tone look. In the aquarium, this species needs genuinely strong lighting and vigorous, consistent water movement to replicate its natural habitat. Conditions that reward some experience to dial in properly, which is why it falls into the intermediate care category. It is fully reef safe and poses no threat to neighboring corals through sweeper tentacles or aggressive chemical competition, making it a manageable addition to a well-established high-flow reef system.
