Ornate Bichir

The ornate bichir (Polypterus ornatipinnis) is one of the most visually arresting members of a fish lineage that predates the dinosaurs. Native to the Congo River basin and surrounding drainages across central and southern Africa, including Angola and the Republic of Congo, it inhabits sluggish swamps and slow-moving river sections where it lurks among cover. The body is elongated and heavily patterned with a bold black-and-yellow marbled design across the flanks and the distinctive row of dorsal finlets that gives the bichir family its prehistoric appearance. Like all bichirs, it is a facultative air-breather, meaning it can gulp atmospheric air and tolerate low-oxygen conditions that would stress most fish. Juveniles feed on worms and insect larvae, but adults shift toward a fish-based diet and do most of their hunting after dark. Despite a reputation for aggression, ornate bichirs are not relentlessly combative toward other species. The main friction comes from tankmates of similar size, or from rivals of their own kind when hiding spots are scarce. This is not a community tank fish by any stretch, and the sheer adult size means only serious, well-equipped keepers should take one on. Given appropriate space and meaty food, though, they are hardy and long-lived.
