The rosette river stingray (Potamotrygon schroederi) is one of the more visually distinctive members of its family, adorned with a detailed rosette-patterned disc that has made it one of the most sought-after freshwater rays in the hobby. It inhabits the blackwater rivers of the Orinoco and Amazon basins, specifically the Apure and Negro river systems, where it lurks along sandy and muddy substrates as an apex predator. Despite that predatory nature, it is not an especially aggressive fish by disposition and does poorly when pushed around by belligerent tankmates. Suitable companions are species large enough to avoid becoming a meal, peaceful in character, and ideally sticking to the upper water column. Arowana, large characins, and certain cichlids such as Heros or Geophagus are among the more compatible choices. Brazilian export restrictions have made this species genuinely scarce in the trade, and most available specimens now come from captive breeders. The care level is listed as beginner, but that designation applies only in relative terms. This fish requires an enormous tank footprint, pristine water, and a keeper who understands that the venomous tail spine is a genuine medical hazard. Shed stings remain dangerous even after they leave the fish. With proper respect and setup, these rays can live well over two decades and often become recognisable to their keepers, rising to the surface at feeding time.
