The Raspy River Stingray (Potamotrygon scobina) is one of the more compact members of its genus and is found in the middle and lower Amazon basin, including the Tocantins, Pará, and Trombetas rivers in Brazil. Its relatively modest adult size compared to other Potamotrygon species has earned it a reputation as a reasonable starting point for keepers new to freshwater rays. Though 'beginner' here still means someone committed to a very large, carefully managed setup. Like all members of its family, this species is a cartilaginous fish with no true bones, and it breathes while resting on the substrate through small openings behind the eyes called spiracles. The venomous tail spine is a genuine hazard, and even experienced keepers treat tank maintenance with serious respect. Nets should never be used, and thick gloves are wise. As a predatory bottom dweller it will readily consume smaller tankmates, though it generally tolerates large, peaceful fish that stay out of its territory. Brazilian export regulations have made genuine P. scobina quite scarce in the hobby, and several other larger species are routinely sold under its name. True specimens can be distinguished by five rows of spines along the tail. These animals can live beyond 20 years, so buying one is a real long-term commitment.
