The Malayan leaffish (Pristolepis fasciata) is a chunky, laterally compressed cichlid-like fish from Southeast Asia, though it belongs to its own distinct family rather than the cichlid lineage. Native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, it inhabits slow-moving and standing waters. Flooded fields, swamps, ponds, and vegetated shorelines. Seasonally, populations in the Mekong basin migrate out onto the floodplains as water rises, then retreat back to the main river as the dry season sets in. That adaptability to varied conditions carries over into the aquarium, though this species is still best suited to keepers with some experience under their belt. In the wild, the diet is surprisingly broad. Plant matter, fruits, seeds, and aquatic insects all feature, but in the home tank it leans firmly carnivorous and should be fed meaty foods. Its deep, banded body and relatively large adult size mean it needs plenty of room and robust tankmates it cannot easily swallow. It can be territorial and assertive, so careful planning around tankmate selection is essential. Not a beginner fish, but a rewarding one for keepers who appreciate something a little off the beaten path.
