The Cocosoda Catfish (Pseudauchenipterus nodosus) is a fascinating species from the turbid, brackish transition zones where South American rivers empty into coastal waters, ranging from Venezuela down through Brazil and including the southern reaches of Trinidad. In the wild it congregates in dense schools over muddy substrates, sifting through sediment and organic matter as an opportunistic omnivore with a strong detritivorous lean. That tolerance for murky, slightly saline conditions makes it an unusual find in the freshwater hobby, and keepers should be aware that some access to harder, higher-pH water suits it well. Despite its somewhat rugged origins, it carries itself as a bold but peaceable tank inhabitant, and like most schooling catfish it really should be kept in groups rather than as a solitary specimen. A 55-gallon setup is a reasonable starting point, though larger tanks are genuinely better given both the group requirement and the species' respectable adult size. One of the more intriguing aspects of this fish is its breeding behavior. Males develop pink coloration on the ventral fins and lower jaw as spawning season approaches, a subtle but rewarding transformation for observant keepers. With a potential lifespan stretching into the teens, this is a long-term commitment that rewards patient, attentive husbandry.
