Found across Indo-Pacific reefs, Pseudochromis paccagnella is one of those fish that consistently surprises keepers who judge it by its size. Barely reaching three inches, it punches well above its weight in terms of attitude, defending its chosen cave or crevice with real conviction against fish many times larger. In the wild these dottybacks occupy the kinds of rubble zones and reef overhangs where shelter is at a premium, which goes a long way toward explaining why captive specimens treat the entire aquarium like personal property. The coloration is genuinely attractive. A bold split of deep violet on the rear half of the body and bright yellow or orange toward the head, making it one of the more visually interesting small reef fish available. Care is not particularly demanding, but the aggression needs to be taken seriously at the planning stage. It works best in a tank with robust, similarly assertive tankmates and plenty of rockwork to break up sightlines. Peaceful nano species, other dottybacks, and smaller gobies tend to end up on the losing end of territorial disputes. If you go in with a clear-eyed understanding of its personality, it can be a rewarding, long-lived addition to a reef system.
