Found on steep outer reef slopes and channel walls across the Western Pacific, this small but feisty dottyback, Pseudochromis porphyreus, ranges from the Philippines and Ryukyu Islands south through the Moluccas and out to Samoa. In the wild it hovers near coral rubble at the base of dramatic drop-offs, usually alone or in loose, scattered groups. That solitary nature carries straight into the aquarium. This fish is intensely territorial and will readily challenge tankmates well beyond its own size, which tops out around three inches at most. The aggression is real and worth planning around, especially in smaller setups where weaker fish have nowhere to retreat. That said, its care requirements are otherwise pretty forgiving, making it a workable choice for a beginner who goes in with eyes open about its personality. A 15-gallon tank can house a single specimen comfortably, and it does best with plenty of rockwork to claim as its own. Feed it meaty foods and it will thrive. Its vivid coloration is consistent and holds well under aquarium lighting. If you want a fish with genuine character and don't mind a bit of attitude, this one delivers on both counts.
