Dottyback

Found along lagoon edges and seaward reef faces, Pseudochromis splendens is a small dottyback native to the Philippines, southeastern Indonesia, and northern Australia. In the wild it gravitates toward drop-offs, staying close to corals and sponges and almost always living alone, occasionally tolerating a partner but rarely seeking company. That solitary nature carries into the aquarium. This is not a community fish in the usual sense, and it can be territorial toward similar-looking or similarly sized tankmates. That said, its aggression is generally manageable in a well-planned reef system, and the species is considered approachable enough for keepers who are still building experience with saltwater setups. Being a carnivore, it needs meaty foods regularly. Frozen mysis, small crustaceans, and similar fare suit it well. A 30-gallon tank is workable, especially if the rockwork provides plenty of nooks and overhangs that mimic the reef structure it naturally hugs. Keeping it with other dottybacks or fish that occupy the same territory is asking for trouble, but paired thoughtfully with larger, unrelated species it tends to settle in without too much drama. Not the longest-lived fish in the hobby, but a capable and self-sufficient resident for a reef or fish-only system.
