Orange Ball Anemone

The orange ball anemone (Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum) is technically a corallimorph rather than a true anemone, though you'd be forgiven for mixing them up at first glance. Those rounded, jewel-like tips on its tentacles are the giveaway, and in this species they typically glow in shades of orange to red, which makes it genuinely hard to look away from when it's fully extended at night. Found across the Caribbean and into parts of the Northwest Pacific including Japan, it lives on benthic reef structures anywhere from shallow water down to considerable depth, usually tucked into overhangs or crevices during the day and opening up after the lights go out. Despite its beginner-friendly care rating, there's one important caveat: those tentacle tips are surprisingly sticky and carry a real enough sting to capture small fish. Any tank mate under about two inches is a potential meal, so plan your stocking accordingly. It also does best when you resist the urge to handle or poke it, since the adhesive tentacles can tear if something gets pulled away abruptly. Low light and low flow suit it well, and it is considered reef safe with appropriately sized inhabitants. A forgiving choice for newer saltwater keepers who want something a little different from the usual coral lineup.
