Knobbed brain coral (Pseudodiploria clivosa) is one of the more recognizable stony corals from the Caribbean, found across a range stretching from Bermuda down through the Caribbean Sea. In the wild it grows from the surface down to around 40 meters, turning up on shallow patch reefs and deeper reef slopes alike. The colony surface is what sets it apart from other brain corals. Instead of smooth, flowing valleys, it develops pronounced ridges and rounded knobs that give it a rougher, more textured look than its close relatives. Coloration tends toward yellows, tans, and muted greens, which fits right in with the warm-water Caribbean reef palette. In the aquarium this is considered a beginner-friendly large polyp stony coral, which is a meaningful distinction in the reef hobby where many SPS corals demand exacting conditions. It does well under moderate lighting and moderate water movement, and it tolerates the kinds of minor fluctuations that trip up more demanding species. That said, it still needs the stable, well-maintained water quality that any reef system requires. Give it some space on the rockwork since colonies grow outward over time, and it may show mild aggression toward neighbors that encroach on its territory.
