Golden Tropheops (Pseudotropheus tropheops) is a mbuna cichlid from the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi, found in the wild from the Maleri Islands across to Chinyamwezi Rocks. Like most mbuna, it hugs the boulder-strewn littoral zone, favoring areas where the substrate stays clean and free of silt. What sets this fish apart from many of its relatives is its feeding style. Rather than simply grazing, it angles its body at roughly 45 degrees to the surface and actively tears and wrenches algae that has a firm grip on the rock. It is a determined herbivore, and in the aquarium that means a diet rich in plant-based foods is not optional. When planktonic food becomes abundant in the wild, the species will opportunistically shift its feeding, which hints at a practical, adaptable character. In the aquarium, it brings the typical mbuna personality: bold, territorial, and best kept with tankmates that can hold their own. The alkaline, hard-water chemistry of Lake Malawi should be replicated closely. Despite that temperament, this is generally considered a manageable choice for keepers who are already comfortable with African cichlids and understand how to structure a properly stocked mbuna community.
