Bornean Rasbora

Native to the forest streams of Sarawak and Borneo, Rasbora sarawakensis is a small, peaceful cyprinid that remains surprisingly obscure in the hobby despite being apparently common across its natural range. It inhabits moderately fast-flowing, clear water in shaded jungle streams. The kind of habitat that rewards hobbyists who lean into a Bornean biotope setup. At under two inches when fully grown, it fits comfortably into smaller tanks and pairs naturally with similarly sized tankmates like other rasboras, small barbs, botiid loaches, and dwarf gouramis. As with most schooling rasboras, keeping a group of at least eight to ten individuals is really the only way to see this fish at its best. Adequate numbers settle the fish down, encourage males to show off their colors as they posture toward one another, and produce the kind of fluid, cohesive movement that makes small schoolers so satisfying to watch. The species appears to be an egg-scatterer like other small cyprinids, and while captive breeding has not been well-documented, it should follow the same general pattern as related species. Honestly, R. sarawakensis is a bit of a gap in the aquarium literature, which makes it an interesting project for hobbyists who enjoy working with under-studied species. A forgiving, beginner-friendly fish that deserves wider availability.
