The Red Fin Banded Pencilfish (Nannostomus erythrurus) is a small, torpedo-shaped characid from the soft, often tea-colored waters of Guyana, Bolivia, and Brazil. Like others in the pencilfish group, it carries a classic striped pattern along its body, but this species distinguishes itself with noticeably reddish coloration in the fins, which deepens and becomes most vivid in well-conditioned fish kept in soft, slightly acidic water. Adults stay quite small, rarely reaching much beyond an inch and a half, which makes them well suited to modestly sized planted setups where fine-leaved vegetation and dim lighting help them feel at ease. In the wild these fish occupy slow or still stretches of water, often among dense aquatic plants or submerged leaf litter, and they bring that same preference for calm conditions into the aquarium. They are peaceful and do best in the company of their own kind or similarly gentle, small tankmates. Pencilfish in general can be a little shy and slow to compete for food, so keeping them with boisterous or fast-moving species is worth avoiding. Feeding is straightforward given their omnivorous nature, though small foods sized to their tiny mouths are necessary. At an intermediate care level, they are a rewarding step up for keepers ready to dial in softer water conditions.
