Red Terror

Known in the hobby as the Red Terror, Cichlasoma festae is one of the more formidable cichlids you can keep in a home aquarium. Native to Pacific-draining rivers from Ecuador down into northern Peru, this fish inhabits everything from smaller streams to mid-sized rivers, where it hunts benthic invertebrates and small fish. Females are particularly vivid, dressed in bold orange and red banding, while males tend toward a greener base coloration with similar barring. Either way, this is a large, physically imposing cichlid that demands serious planning before you commit. At full size, anything around six inches or under is a potential meal, which makes tankmate selection genuinely difficult. You really want to be pairing it with fish of comparable size and attitude. Other large South American cichlids are the usual candidates. Breeding is possible but comes with real challenges: incompatible pairs will fight to the death, so the standard approach is raising a group of juveniles and letting a natural pair form on its own. When breeding does go smoothly, females can deposit close to 3,000 eggs in a cave or sheltered rock formation, and both parents guard the fry with fierce dedication. Plan for the long haul with this one. Rehoming a foot-long Red Terror is no easy task.
