Parrot Doradid

Found in the Pastaza River basin of Ecuador, this obscure doradid catfish, Rhynchodoras woodsi, goes by the nickname "parrot doradid". A nod to its curious probing behavior and the unusual bony growth extending from its upper jaw. What exactly that structure does remains an open question. One idea is that it shields the delicate barbels from damage, while another suggests it works as a kind of lever for prying invertebrates out of submerged wood and root tangles. Either way, it gives the fish a distinctly quirky look that sets it apart from other small catfish in the hobby. R. woodsi is genuinely uncommon in the trade, so if you come across one, it is worth a closer look. In terms of temperament, it is as peaceful as they come, though that gentleness is also its main care challenge. It does not compete well at feeding time with pushy tankmates. Pair it with calm species that occupy the upper and mid-water columns, like small characins, livebearers, or non-aggressive cichlids, and it will fare much better. Groups work fine together, and they will often pile into the same hiding spot during the day. Breeding has not been documented in captivity.
