The rice eel (Monopterus albus), also widely known as the Asian swamp eel, is a genuinely unusual animal that challenges most of what you think you know about fish. Despite the common name, it belongs to the order Synbranchiformes rather than true eels, lacking scales, a swimbladder, ribs, and the fins that define Anguilliform species. Its reduced dorsal, anal, and caudal fins carry no rays whatsoever. Spread across a huge range from India through China, Japan, and into Southeast Asia, it occupies everything from flooded rice paddies and sluggish canals to hill streams and estuaries. When conditions dry out, it burrows into moist earth, sometimes well over a meter deep, and waits things out, a trick that makes it extraordinarily tough. It breathes air through a specialized accessory organ tucked into the gill chamber, and in a pinch can cross short stretches of land as long as its skin stays damp. In the aquarium, this is a nocturnal, burrowing carnivore with genuinely impressive adult size, and it will eat tankmates without hesitation. Best kept on its own, and given the space and escape-proofing it demands, this one suits an intermediate keeper with a specific interest in unusual predators. Its sex-reversal biology, all individuals start female, with some transitioning to male at maturity, adds another layer of fascination to an already remarkable species.
