Whiptailed Loricaria (Rineloricaria fallax) is one of the more commonly encountered whiptail catfish in the hobby, and for good reason. It's a manageable, rewarding species that works well as an introduction to keeping or breeding loricariids. Native to the upper Rupununi and Branco River basins in South America, it has the classic whiptail body plan: long, slender, and flattened, built for hugging the substrate in slow or moderate currents. Despite the "aggressive" flag that sometimes appears in species lists, this fish is actually quite peaceful outside of spawning activity, and does well in a community of calm tankmates. Small characins, Apistogramma, and Corydoras all make natural companions in a biotope-style setup. What you want to avoid is keeping it alongside boisterous or pushy fish. It will retreat and struggle to compete for food. One genuinely fascinating trait of the genus is facultative air-breathing, meaning it can supplement gill respiration by gulping air when oxygen levels drop. Breeding is one of this species' highlights: the male takes full responsibility for guarding and fanning the eggs inside a cave, and will defend the site attentively until the fry are free-swimming. Raising the fry requires some effort with soft foods and careful water quality management, but the spawning process itself is not hard to trigger once the fish are well conditioned.
