The sailfin tang (Zebrasoma velifer) is one of the most immediately recognizable surgeonfish in the hobby, thanks to its dramatically oversized dorsal and anal fins that, when fully extended, can nearly double the fish's apparent body size. The base coloring runs through earthy browns and yellows with detailed white striping and spotting, and juveniles are especially ornate. Though that gorgeous pattern does simplify somewhat with age. In the wild, this species ranges widely across the Indo-Pacific, from the Indian Ocean through the Pacific as far as Hawaii and the Pitcairn Islands, typically grazing on leafy macroalgae across lagoon and seaward reef environments, from shallow surge zones down to about 30 meters. Juveniles tend to be shy, tucking into rocky or coral-covered areas on more sheltered reefs. As with all surgeonfish, there is a sharp, scalpel-like spine near the base of the tail that can cause injury if the fish is handled carelessly. This is a genuinely large tang that needs a serious amount of horizontal swimming space, and most casual setups simply won't cut it. Reef-safe and primarily focused on algae, it can be a rewarding long-term resident for hobbyists who can accommodate its size and provide regular herbivore-appropriate feeding.
