Found only in the rocky, alkaline depths of the southern half of Lake Tanganyika, Neolamprologus sexfasciatus is a robustly built cichlid that earns its intermediate care rating mostly through sheer attitude. Several geographic color morphs exist, including variants known as 'Sambia' and 'Kipili', and depending on origin the base coloration can range from bluish to yellow or white, all overlaid with the six bold vertical bars that give this fish its name. In the wild it behaves as a predator, and in the aquarium that hunting mindset never really switches off. Tankmates need to be chosen thoughtfully. Mid-water swimmers like Cyprichromis or larger rock-dwelling cichlids such as Altolamprologus can work in a spacious setup, but this species is not suited to a general Tanganyikan community. Aggression toward its own kind is intense, and outside of a bonded pair the fish will simply not tolerate each other. Getting that pair is itself a project: buy a group of juveniles, let them choose partners naturally over a year or more, then rehome the rest. Breeding happens in caves the pair often dig out themselves, and the male's territorial behavior during spawning can border on ferocious. Rewarding, but definitely not a beginner fish.
