Found on tropical reefs in the Western Central Pacific, Sarcophyton elegans is a soft coral native to the waters around New Caledonia. Like other members of its genus, it takes the form of a sessile, mushroom-shaped colony with a broad, ruffled cap sitting atop a thick stalk. The classic toadstool silhouette that makes sarcophytons easy to recognize at a glance. One of the more practical things about keeping this coral is how clearly it communicates its mood. When water conditions are good, the colony extends its polyps and looks full and open.
