Leather Coral

Found along the reefs of South Africa, Sarcophyton flexuosum is a soft coral belonging to the leather coral group, a family well regarded in reef aquariums for resilience and relatively undemanding care. Like other sarcophytons, it grows as a fleshy, lobed colony with a mushroom-like or folded cap covered in small polyps when fully extended. The surface texture and the gentle rippling of that cap are what give leather corals their characteristic look. Understated compared to the flashier SPS corals, but with a satisfying organic quality that suits a lot of reef builds. This species comes from South African waters, which makes it somewhat less commonly encountered in the trade than Indo-Pacific leathers, though its care needs are broadly similar. It handles moderate lighting and moderate flow without complaint, and its tolerance for imperfect conditions makes it a reasonable choice for reef keepers who are still dialing in their systems. One thing worth knowing about leather corals in general is that they periodically shed a waxy coat and may close up for several days during the process. This is completely normal and not a sign of trouble. Give it good water quality and room to grow, and it tends to reward that patience steadily.
