Found on shallow reef slopes across the Western Pacific, Sarcophyton glaucum is a soft coral in the alcyonacean family, known more commonly just by its genus name among reef keepers. Its range spans from New Caledonia and Palau north through Taiwan to the Ryukyu Islands, where it grows in both tropical and subtropical conditions. A distribution that hints at its adaptability. In the aquarium, it forms the classic toadstool or mushroom cap shape typical of leather corals: a broad, rubbery cap covered in small polyps that extend when conditions are favorable and retract when disturbed or preparing to shed. That periodic shedding, where the coral sloughs a waxy film from its surface, is completely normal behavior and briefly makes the coral look like it's declining. It isn't. Water flow and moderate lighting are all it really asks for, and it tolerates the kinds of fluctuations that would stress more sensitive corals. The genus does produce allelopathic compounds that can irritate nearby corals, so give it a bit of space in the arrangement. For someone building their first reef tank, this is one of the more forgiving soft corals available, and its presence gives a tank that natural, moving quality that draws people to the reef hobby in the first place.
